Abundant Beauty- www.gildedbloom.com

“A thing of beauty is a joy for ever:

Its loveliness increases; it will never

Pass into nothingness; but still will keep "- John Keats

The grandeur of the rose is timeless and it is one of my favorite early summer flowers.   There are so many different varieties each with its own character, fragrance and unique color.  In May and early June when our garden roses bloom they bring the most lovely scent and soft color.

The legendary beauty of the rose is celebrated in this piece.  I was inspired by the elegance of old world floral designs which often include a profusion of roses.  They were essential components in flower arrangements during the Victorian period when floral design was first recognized as a form of art.

Coral Charm Peonies

Coral Charm Peonies- www.gildedbloom.com

The coral charm peony is one of the most fascinating late spring flowers.  Over the course of just a few days, it transforms itself from an intense coral bud to a bright watermelon pink bloom then turns a soft apricot tone and finishes as a faded cream color.  The blooms are large and lacy with many layers of petals and are stunning in arrangements.

Coral Charm peonies are herbaceous perennials and prefer full sun.  They grow about 24" tall and 2-3 ft wide when mature.  Peony plants often take a year or two to get established and usually produce few or no blooms the first year.  In four or five years the plant will be fully mature and have many blooms if it receives enough sun and proper care.

Peonies form a lovely complement with ranunculus and snapdragons as they are all flowers that thrive in late spring.  The round shape and large scale of the peony blooms overshadow the smaller ranunculus and the stalky snapdragons when arranged, but the three flowers together provide visual interest.

Observing the changing beauty of these flowers inspired me to create this acrylic painting on canvas, titled "Coral Charm".  Additional information can be found here.

Summer Flower Paintings

Summer Flower Paintings- www.gildedbloom.com

The studio has been a busy place this summer as I have been working on a new collection of paintings along with commissioned works.

One particularly rewarding creative project I recently completed for a client remodeling her master bedroom presented the challenge of painting two decorative floral arrangements from my imagination without relying on an actual arrangement of flowers for reference.

The buyer, who is an avid collector of purple Depression glass, selected two favorite pedestal vases from her lovely collection for me to photograph, then I began sketching and designing a pair of painted floral arrangements that would fit the vases and complement the colors of her beautiful new bedroom!

Many of the flowers included in the paintings are varieties grown in our garden over the years except for the pink peonies which I was lucky enough to find at the market.  Predominantly old fashioned flowers were selected to fuse with the antique style of the vases and the elegant, traditional bedroom decor.

Hydrangeas, roses and peonies arranged in a decorative design are painted in thin layers of acrylic paint to capture the dimensional quality of the flowers and the range of colors.  It was especially fun to paint the petals of these blooms glazed by light.

It is always a joy to paint home grown flowers as it makes the rewards of working in the garden more permanent.  Soon I will be planting a fall flower garden and as I plan the varieties of flowers, I'm always thinking of the future paintings they may become...

In the Studio: Sunwashed Floral Watercolors- www.gildedbloom.com

As the summer comes to a close I am spending more time in the studio.  Lately, I've been working with watercolors to create these expressive floral paintings of favorite blooms.  They reflect a sunwashed summer palette of dusty blues, pale golden yellows and faded coral pinks.

These are iphone photos that I've posted on my art studio's Instagram feed @gildedbloomstudio.   Feel free to follow me there to see more art in process!

This sunflower is a soft and muted version of the bright yellow blooms that grace the garden in August and September.  The pale gold and yellow ochre petals make a subtle statement.

Farmhouse Floral with Golden Sunflowers

Farmhouse Floral with Sunflowers - www.gildedbloom.com

As September approaches I am bringing warm and vivid hues into the home for early fall.  Golden sunflowers, rust Peruvian lily, green hydrangeas and chamomile provide a vibrant mix of color in this rustic farmhouse floral arrangement.

Creating a design like this is simple with the right flowers and container.  Choosing flowers that have a textural quality like sunflowers, wildflowers or grasses will give a country aesthetic as they appear to come from the fields rather than the florist.  Weathered terra cotta, copper, or galvanized steel containers all suggest a rustic style and complement the beauty of farmhouse decor.

In this design, the bold yellow blooms of the sunflowers provide a colorful statement in a neutral terra cotta urn and reflect the casual elegance of the country.  To create this look, cut the sunflower stems at different heights and insert them into the vase of water.  Then add the hydrangeas between the sunflowers and fill in with Peruvian lily and chamomile.

Sprays of blossoming chamomile interspersed throughout the vase add an element of texture and a sprinkle of light to the otherwise richly colored flowers.

Rust Peruvian lilies balance the use of gold and set off the more dominant sunflowers in this design.

In addition to bringing farmhouse style into the home I've also been bringing it into the studio lately!  These are a few recent watercolor studies of chickens that I've painted to explore the colorful beauty of their feathers.   Enjoy!

"Cascading Tulips", 9 x 12- www.gildedbloom.com

Hello and Happy New Year! I hope you all had a lovely holiday and that you are now enjoying the beautiful quiet days of winter. For me this season provides a break from the many tasks that pile up in the garden and I find myself in the studio more often exploring the process of painting.

One of the highlights of creating art is choosing a palette of color and these fresh and spirited tones of pink, blue, green and yellow are bringing the essence of spring into the studio on these cold winter days.

"Cascading Tulips", 9 x 12- www.gildedbloom.com

The first painting of 2017 was this watercolor tulip study.

"Cascading Tulips", #wip- www.gildedbloom.com

Here you can see its beginning as a watercolor sketch.  The finished work below is highlighted with iridescent paint to catch the light.   The colors in this piece remind me of the vibrant pastels that often tint tulips as they bloom.

A Painted Garden...

Filoli
Quiet Respite, mixed media, 2015.

The art of the garden is, for me, an endless subject of personal fascination.  I adore visiting and touring gardens of all styles to see the work of inspiring designers.  Every space is unique and seems to possess a different ambiance based on the plant choices, lighting, climate and natural topography that is a part of the environment.

Filoli
Autumn in the Olive Grove, mixed media, 2015.

Lately in the studio I am drawn to expressive art techniques and textural materials as I experiment with landscape paintings of the garden.  Since nature is central in much of my work, celebrating different gardens that I have enjoyed visiting over the years is a delight and a challenge for me as an artist.

These two mixed media paintings are of Filoli, in Woodside, California and were selected to be shown there as a part of the exhibit Seasons of Filoli which runs from September 1 through October 25, 2015.

Vernal Overture...

Friday, May 1, 2015

As the heat of early summer wafts through the morning air I find myself in the studio more often, painting and creating.  The many soft and ephemeral blossoming trees and flowers that called me outdoors with my camera in the early hours of spring are now replaced by bright, hearty summer-proof blooms.  As I burrow inside with my paintbrush in hand, I am looking back over the collection of blossom photos I took when the earth was just beginning to thaw and bring forth a new year of mesmerizing life in the garden.

Our star magnolia tree is usually one of the first to bloom.  It leads all the others into the beautiful dance of spring with its blushing white blossoms and leafless branches.  This mixed media painting was  inspired by its awakening.  The soft frost blue and watery greens, accented with delicate gold, reflect the atmosphere of the garden as the winter cold melts away in the subtle light of early spring.

This piece is a mixed watermedia collage on paper and measures 20"x 28".  It includes textured papers and fibers, watercolor, acrylic, beads and metallic line-work.  Iridescent paint highlights the composition and illuminates the magnolia blossoms...

In Process...

Tuesday, September 16, 2014

I've been inspired by blues and greens lately and the tranquility of water.  This painting is not yet complete but I thought you may enjoy seeing it "in process".  There are many layers of color and texture.

The feel of fall is in the air but I find few flowers now.  The garden is between seasons with late summer lingering and autumn on the horizon...

Autumn Daisy

Monday, August 25, 2014

It has been a busy time in the studio for me lately as I am now painting the Autumn floral collection.  This daisy is a bloom that just appeared on a plant that grew in our garden during the spring.  Originally the flowers were a bright coral hue but they have come back in a much lighter more sunwashed shade of orange.  It is interesting how nature changes through time...

Enjoy your week!
